Books About Making Comics
- 'Comics: Easy As A B C! The Essential Guide to Comics For Kids' by Ivan Brunetti
- For a more adult level class format from Ivan Brunetti, try 'Cartooning: Philosophy and Practice' (download PDF link)
- 'Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art' by Scott McCloud
- 'Making Comics' by Scott McCloud
- 'The Lexicon of Comicana' by Mort Walker, artist of 'Beetle Bailey'
- Learn about making comics with Drawing Words and Writing Pictures, an oldschool 2000's era book and accompanying educational website for eager artists that I learned from and personally taught using years later. The book is incredible and still in print!
- 'Foundations in Comic Book Art: SCAD Creative Essentials (Fundamental Tools and Techniques for Sequential Artists)' by John Paul Lowe is a book I read and self-led myself through the class within it before I attended college and it helped me really get an understanding of comics which helped me a lot. It's basically a SCAD class for a small cost in a book format, incredibly valuable as SCAD is a notable school for the sequential arts!
- 'Making Comics' by Lynda Barry, and really anything and everything Lynda Barry makes is CRUCIAL READING for ANY CREATIVE!!! <3 :D
- If you want to teach art 'Syllabus' by Lynda Barry is also a great book from her with lots of comic-like exercises and an expansion of what a class can possibly be, interlinking the act of creation with the scientific understanding of how creativity works in the brain and how our brains work makes for an interesting class to take or teach using 'Syllabus.'
- 'Framed Ink: Drawing and Composition for Visual Storytellers' by Marcos Mateu-Mestre
- 'The Essential Guide to Comic Book Lettering' by Nate Piekos
